HARLEM, N.Y., April 10, 2024 ~ Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) is gearing up for a momentous occasion as it celebrates its 60th anniversary of artistic excellence and community impact. The renowned institution has announced its 60th Anniversary Gala, which will take place on May 20th at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City. The gala will be followed by an afterparty hosted by Black Thought, lead MC of the legendary performing group, The Roots, and Questlove, founding bandmember and renowned musician who will DJ for the rest of the evening.

The upcoming landmark event is dedicated to honoring the legacy of HSA's founder, Dorothy Maynor. Maynor was an internationally acclaimed concert soprano and a champion of arts education. In line with her vision, HSA will be honoring a distinguished group of individuals at this year's gala for their contributions to enriching the cultural landscape.

Among those being honored are Nicole A. Avant, author and former Ambassador to the Bahamas; Jacqueline & Clarence Avant, posthumously, who were trailblazers in philanthropy, entertainment business and politics; Deborah Roberts, ABC News 20/20 co-anchor; Al Roker, weather anchor on NBC's TODAY Show and co-anchor of the 3rd Hour of TODAY alongside his son Nicholas Roker; and Jennifer Jones Austin, American civil rights activist and CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies.

In addition to honoring these outstanding individuals, HSA will also be recognizing Jacqueline and Clarence Avant's enduring legacy by establishing the Jacqueline and Clarence Avant Scholarship Fund. This fund has been generously seeded with a $500,000 donation from legendary trumpeter and philanthropist, Herb Alpert. This contribution will help bridge the financial gap for HSA's families, ensuring that aspiring students and artists have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. It will not only break down barriers to entry but also open doors to a world of creative possibilities for generations to come.

She also thanked Herb Alpert for his generous contributions to HSA and for cementing her parents' impact on future generations.
