LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10, 2024 ~ New York City - As Tesla gears up to announce their highly anticipated "ROBOTAXI" feature, AMCI Testing, a leading independent automotive testing and consulting firm, has conducted an in-depth assessment of the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in the bustling city of New York. This comes after their previous evaluation on the West Coast, which yielded concerning results.
With a population density and unique street layout that presents challenges for FSD even beyond what was experienced in Southern California, New York City was the perfect location for AMCI Testing's evaluation. Following their protocol, the assessment was carried out with a 2024 Model 3 equipped with "Hardware 4" and running the most current software version, 12.5.4.
The latest evaluation in New York City traffic and surroundings revealed that FSD had an even higher intervention rate than their previous test - averaging one intervention every 11 miles. It is important to note that AMCI Testing's professional drivers only intervene if FSD's actions put the occupants, public or other motorists at risk.

Among the most egregious intervention scenarios encountered were instances of speeding in residential areas, abrupt braking inside tunnels after losing GPS signal, and making illegal turns. In one particularly alarming situation, FSD attempted to make a left turn from a divided boulevard on green but failed to stop at successive red lights for opposing traffic.
Guy Mangiamele, Director of AMCI Testing expressed his concerns about Tesla's claims of autonomous capabilities with their current hardware and software versions. "If Tesla's Robotaxi is running Hardware 4/v 12.5.4 it may well work in a film studio carpark," he stated, "but AMCI Testing's assessment shows it falls well short of any true autonomy in the real world."
As Tesla prepares to unveil their Robotaxi feature and showcase its performance claims, AMCI Testing has released six videos of their previous evaluations to demonstrate the complex issues of trust and performance that FSD continues to pose to drivers and the public. These videos can be viewed on their website, along with updates on their ongoing assessments.
The results of AMCI Testing's evaluation in New York City raise questions about the readiness of Tesla's FSD technology for real-world use. As the company moves forward with their plans for a fully autonomous future, it remains to be seen if their claims will hold up under scrutiny.
