NEW YORK and PITTSBURGH, June 17, 2024 ~ On Sunday, June 16, the theater community gathered at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York for the 77th Annual Tony Awards. The prestigious event, which honors the best of Broadway performances and productions from 2023-2024, was broadcasted on multiple platforms including Pluto TV, Paramount+, and CBS.
Among the evening's highlights were the wins of several Carnegie Mellon University alumni. Will Brill, a 2009 graduate of CMU's School of Drama, took home the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role as Reg in "Stereophonic." Jamie deRoy, a 1967 alumna of Carnegie Mellon, won two Tonys as a producer for "Merrily We Roll Along" (Best Revival of a Musical) and "Stereophonic" (Best Play). Additionally, Billy Porter, a 1991 School of Drama alumnus, received the prestigious Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his outstanding contributions as an activist and spokesperson for LGBTQ+ communities.
Carnegie Mellon University has a long-standing tradition of producing top talent in both onstage and behind-the-scenes roles. Its School of Drama is not only the oldest degree-granting drama school in the country but also consistently ranks as one of the best drama schools in the world.

President Farnam Jahanian expressed his pride in seeing CMU alumni being recognized at such a high level in their field. He stated that Broadway and the Tony Awards are among the highest forms of praise possible for performing artists.
In addition to celebrating its alumni's achievements on Broadway, CMU also honored an arts educator during this year's Tony Awards. In partnership with The Broadway League, CMU co-founded the Excellence in Theatre Education Award to recognize outstanding K-12 drama teachers across the United States.
This year's recipient was CJay Philip from Baltimore, Maryland. A CMU alumna and actress in "A Doll's House," Jesmille Darbouze, along with President Jahanian, presented Philip with the award during the Tony Awards: Act One. Philip was recognized for her efforts in providing high-quality theater training to at-risk youth through her organization, Dance & Bmore Theater Programs.
Actor, director, and Tony-Award winning producer Tamara Tunie, also a CMU alumna and university trustee, announced that submissions for the 2025 Excellence in Theatre Education Award are now open. The winner will receive a $10,000 grant and a visiting master class for their students taught by CMU Drama faculty.
