City of New Rochelle to Host Sustainability Community Events During Earth Week and Beyond

~ New Rochelle, NY - The City of New Rochelle is gearing up for a series of interactive and outdoor events in celebration of Earth Day and the city's commitment to sustainability. Residents of all ages are invited to join in on the festivities and learn about the importance of building a greener and more environmentally responsible community.

The upcoming events, which will take place throughout April and May, are part of the city's efforts to strengthen resilience within New Rochelle as outlined in the 2025 GreeNR sustainability plan. These events also aim to engage with the community and activate public spaces and parks.

City Manager Wilfredo Melendez expressed his excitement for the upcoming events, stating, "We're excited to celebrate Earth Week and Earth Month, and continue into May with events that highlight our commitment to sustainability. These diverse activities reflect our values in action and our push for a more resilient future. We invite the community to join in!"

The first event on the lineup is "Why Trees Matter!" on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 pm at the New Rochelle Public Library. This presentation will educate attendees on the vital role trees play in creating a healthier, safer, and more resilient community. The City's Street Tree Inventory and Community Forest Management Plan will also be discussed, along with an exploration of urban forestry benefits. Attendees can also interact with real-time data on City trees through the ArborPro Community Viewer.

On Saturday, April 26 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Anderson Plaza, residents can come together for the New Rochelle Earth Day Festival. This event will feature a sustainable marketplace with green vendors and organizations, as well as music and art activities.

For those looking to give back to their community while also promoting sustainability, Volunteer New York! is hosting a Parks Clean Up event on April 26-27 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Residents can sign up to volunteer at one or more of the 12 clean up events happening at parks throughout the city.

Moving into May, residents can participate in the Tag NR Community Wide Tag Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Hamilton Avenue City Hall. Those interested in selling items such as clothing, electronics, furniture, and household items can register as an official vendor for this city-wide tag sale event.

Also on May 3, New Rochelle's 12th Annual Kite Day will take place at Davenport Park from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm. Residents are encouraged to bring their own kites or make one on-site and enjoy light refreshments, music, and an arts and crafts table to decorate their kites.

On Monday, May 12 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Hamilton Avenue Parking Lot, residents can attend DPW Touch a Truck Day. This event will give attendees the opportunity to see and learn about various trucks used by the Department of Public Works.

In addition to these events, the City of New Rochelle is also working towards further sustainability and climate resilience through its 2025 GreeNR sustainability plan. The plan aims to guide future development in an environmentally responsible, economically vibrant, and socially equitable manner. The city is also working on expanding green public spaces for all residents and visitors through the LINC project which will transform a portion of Memorial Highway into a walkable public linear green park.
