~ Mayor Malik D. Evans proudly announced today that the City of Rochester's West River Wall Improvements at the North Star Commons project has been recognized as the American Public Works Association's (APWA) Public Works Project of the Year in the category of Structure Projects valued at $5 million but less than $25 million. The prestigious award was presented at the APWA conference in Atlanta this week, acknowledging the project's significant impact on the community and its success in improving infrastructure, public safety, and overall quality of life.
In a statement, Mayor Evans expressed his gratitude to all those involved in making this project a success. "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the many people who were involved in this transformative project," he said. "These improvements have significantly enhanced the ability for people to connect to the Genesee River in ways that were impossible before and have substantially contributed to the revitalization and beautification of our Downtown. We owe a great deal of thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul and our legislative delegation for their continued advocacy for the City of Rochester."

The West River Wall Improvements project was a collaborative effort between multiple organizations including the City of Rochester, New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC), New York State Department of State (NYSDOS), Rochester Gas and Electric, and the Corn Hill Neighborhood Association. The project was also featured in the July issue of APWA magazine.
Some notable highlights of this project include rebuilding a portion of the West River Wall along the Genesee River between Ford Street Bridge and Corn Hill Landing. This not only restored flood protection but also enhanced riverfront access, providing connections to adjacent neighborhoods. Additionally, approximately four acres along the western bank of Genesee River were reclaimed through this project, featuring a naturalized shoreline, lawn areas, an enhanced Genesee Riverway Trail, a central public plaza, a raised table intersection for pedestrian safety, and an ADA-accessible boat launch.
The West River Wall Improvements project is just one of the many initiatives under the "Roc the Riverway" program, which aims to revitalize and enhance Rochester's waterfront. With this recognition from APWA, it is clear that this project has made a significant impact on the community and will continue to do so for years to come.
