NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2024 ~ In the midst of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) has announced a US$2 million First Emergency Response grant to support the education and mental health needs of children and adolescents. This grant is part of ECW's overall funding of approximately US$36 million in the State of Palestine.
According to the United Nations, since early October 2023, over 625,000 children enrolled in schools across Gaza have been unable to access education due to attacks and damage sustained by more than 370 schools. This has had a devastating impact on the lives of these young people who are already facing unimaginable hardships.
In response to this urgent situation, ECW has partnered with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) to deliver a fast-acting 12-month grant through their Better Learning Programme in Palestine. The aim is to improve learning conditions for children and adolescents in Gaza.

But even before the recent hostilities, it was estimated that 800,000 children in Gaza were in need of mental health and psychosocial support. The current violence has only exacerbated this need, with hundreds of girls and boys being killed or injured every day. UNICEF has declared that "the Gaza Strip is the most dangerous place in the world to be a child."
Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait, emphasized the dire situation in Gaza and called on world leaders to take action. "2.2 million Palestinians are facing an epic humanitarian catastrophe," she said. "We are calling on world leaders to support diplomatic efforts for a lasting ceasefire and provide safe access for humanitarian aid."
The grant from ECW will provide much-needed support for mental health services and education for children and adolescents in Gaza. However, NRC's Secretary General Jan Egeland stressed that this is just a small step towards addressing the immense needs of these young people. "The children and young people who have suffered during this unprecedented conflict must not be forgotten," he said. "They will need sustained support for years to come."

ECW has been providing continuous funding for education in the State of Palestine since 2019, including a US$10 million First Emergency Response announced in November 2023. However, there is still a significant funding gap to meet the critical needs of 3.1 million people across the State of Palestine. ECW and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres are calling on donors to scale up their contributions to bridge this gap and provide much-needed support for the people of Gaza.
In conclusion, the situation in Gaza is dire and children and adolescents are bearing the brunt of this ongoing crisis. The grant from ECW is a step towards addressing their immediate needs, but sustained support will be necessary to help them recover from the trauma they have endured. It is crucial that world leaders and donors prioritize the needs of these young people in order to protect their futures.
