Rethinking Humanity: Emotions, Ethics and Norms in an Era of Rapid Innovation
NEW YORK - Nyenta -- In a rare alignment of intellectual forces, renowned scholars from diverse fields such as computational linguistics, Affective AI, philosophy, sociology, and psychology are set to converge at the Helix Center for Interdisciplinary Investigation. This eagerly awaited, public roundtable discussion—entitled "Emotion"—aims to dissect, scrutinize, and shed light on the enigmatic topic of emotions from multiple perspectives. The event takes place on September 23, 2023, at 2:30pm EST in The Marianne & Nicholas Young Auditorium, located at the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute.
"Our upcoming Emotion roundtable was curated to open a dialogue on the evolving complexities of human emotion," states Edward Nersessian. "The concept of 'evolving' highlights the renewed attention that emotion has attracted in the fields of psychology, literary criticism, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. These disciplines, both individually and collectively, are challenging traditional paradigms and raising ethical questions that go to the heart of our human essence."

The distinguished panel features Rosalind Picard, a groundbreaker in Affective Computing Research at MIT; Mabel Berezin, Professor in Sociology and a keen observer of democratic cohesion; Katherine Elkins, whose work bridges literature, philosophy, and AI; Rob Hopkins, a philosopher with a focus on the mind and aesthetics; and Joseph LeDoux, a pioneer in the study of brain mechanisms of emotion. Together, they will explore questions that have puzzled humanity for ages: Are emotions evolutionary by-products or core to survival? Can emotions be programmed into artificial intelligence? Do emotions form a natural class?
Admission is free but seating is limited, so early arrival is advised. For those who are interested but cannot attend the live event, a video will be available on the @helixcenter YouTube channel soon after.
