NEW YORK - Nyenta -- Award-winning Indie/Pop artist AJ Smith returns with his latest single "Roommate," available worldwide on February 12th. Well-known for his prowess with a multitude of instruments like guitar and violin, AJ Smith experiments with a ukulele for the first time, combining it with a whirl of feel-good harmonies, synths, and vocals. "Roommate" is a quirky, lighthearted tune centered around a momentous moment in a relationship, where you ask your significant other if they'd like to live with you. AJ Smith's single "Roommate" brightly encourages listeners to make their living situations official during this unconventional Valentine's Day.
Inspired by real-life experience, AJ Smith originally wrote "Roommate" when he wanted to ask his girlfriend about living together. "Is it weird for me to say I'm excited for the day we both pee with the door open?" he sings in the opening line. With creative albeit weird lyrics like this one, "Roommate" embodies the various reactions that living together brings to light— from awkward instances such as navigating through your combined cleaning habits to the loving moments where you awaken to the same face in the morning. AJ Smith perfectly captures the initial nervousness of allowing someone to see you as you fully are and the later reassurance that comes when you both decide to make it work and have fun together doing so.

Accentuating the uniqueness of the lyrics in "Roommate," AJ Smith creates a heartwarming instrumental, bursting with honest and anxious excitement. His lo-fi ukulele kickstarts the song with an intimate, Bedroom Pop feel before transforming into an upbeat soundscape composed of 808s, vintage synths, and an acapella breakdown. "Roommate" further includes a full doo-wop bridge a la "The Longest Time" and references to The Beach Boy's classic, "Wouldn't it be Nice?"
"I wanted to make it funny, but as a mask for the underlying insecurity and nervousness. Like many people, I deflect with humor and thought that should be captured in the song, even down to the hook of calling my significant other my 'roommate.' It's a little bit of a joke, but also a reality for a lot of people," says AJ Smith.
As a young up-and-coming artist, AJ Smith has established himself in the industry with his uncanny ability to revitalize Pop of decades past. He has recently caught the ear of Billy Joel, earning an endorsement of his latest single and an invitation to perform once touring resumes. Currently relocated in New York from Colorado, AJ Smith is continuously garnering press and praise for his music, and "Roommate" is simply another prolific addition to his previous work.
