NEW YORK, Feb. 25, 2024 ~ The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) is proud to announce the opening of their new building located at 122 East 32nd Street in New York City. To inaugurate this new space, the KCCNY will be presenting a retrospective exhibition titled "John Pai: Eternal Moment" from March 6 to April 18, 2024.
John Pai, a renowned figure in the Korean arts scene in New York, has been selected as the featured artist for this exhibition. His life and works embody the enduring spirit of innovation and true artistry, as well as reflect the rich narrative of Korean history. Through decades of tumultuous history, Pai's artistic journey has not only contributed significantly to the New York art scene but also served as a bridge between cultures.
The retrospective "John Pai: Eternal Moment" celebrates Pai's legacy and explores his contributions to the fabric of art history in New York. It also honors his role in shaping the identity and perception of Korean artistry on the international stage. In addition to his artworks, visitors will have the opportunity to view an oral history interview with John Pai conducted by historian Leyla Vural in the summer of 2021. This interview offers meaningful insight into Pai's life and art.
One notable aspect of John Pai's artistic journey is his use of steel as his primary material for all his sculptures since the early 1960s. He chose steel for its humility over any other metal, its ready availability, and its flexibility between solid and liquid states. This choice reflects Pai's resilient spirit and conscientious nature.
Pai's creative process involves analyzing objects' fundamentals and principles of nature into basic units of 'dots' and 'lines' and organically combining them. This approach sets him apart from traditional sculpting techniques, which typically involve chiseling stone or wood or utilizing casting methods. Pai likens his process to a classical music composer creating rhythm and harmony by drawing notes on a staff with improvisation.

Born in Seoul in 1937, John Pai's early childhood was spent in Seoul and Ilsan until he moved to the United States at the age of 11, just before the Korean War in 1948. His parents were deeply involved in Korea's political turmoil at the time, which greatly influenced his life and artworks. Despite this challenging upbringing, Pai pursued a career as an artist, eventually becoming a professor at Pratt Institute in 1965.
Pai's role as a pivotal figure among Korean artists in New York, such as Kim Whanki, Kim Tschang-Yeul, and Nam June Paik in the 1970s-90s, may have been influenced by his sense of historical mission and indebtedness. Through his art and teachings, Pai has served as a bridge between cultures and has contributed significantly to the global diaspora of Korean artists.
As KCCNY opens its doors to a new chapter with its new building, "John Pai: Eternal Moment" serves as a fitting tribute to this influential artist's legacy. The exhibition not only celebrates Pai's contributions to the New York art scene but also highlights the resilience, creativity, and unique perspective of Korean artists on the international stage.
