~ In his third State of the City Address on Wednesday, Mayor Malik D. Evans declared that Rochester is gaining new momentum thanks to the collaborative efforts of community partners. Speaking at the Port of Rochester, Mayor Evans emphasized the importance of working together to build a safer, more equitable, and more prosperous city for all residents.

According to Mayor Evans, the people of Rochester are the city's greatest resource and their collective efforts are driving this new momentum. He stated, "We, not me, are working together. All of us – are moving Rochester forward together." This sense of unity and collaboration has been instrumental in creating positive change in various aspects of the city.

One area where this collaborative effort has been particularly successful is in public safety. Mayor Evans highlighted the commitment to using all available tools to reduce gun violence, which has resulted in significant progress. From 2021 through 2024, shootings decreased by 53 percent, shooting injuries by 51 percent, and fatal shootings by 49 percent.

But beyond these statistics, Mayor Evans pointed out that there are visible signs of progress in communities across Rochester. As residents feel safer on their streets, they are becoming more engaged and empowered to contribute to the city's momentum. This can be seen in neighborhoods like Lyell-Otis, Edgerton, and Maplewood where residents have revived partnerships with the police department and organized activities to beautify business corridors.

Mayor Evans also highlighted the success of initiatives aimed at making Rochester a more equitable city. These efforts have been particularly impactful in neighborhoods with a history of segregation and redlining. The implementation of recommendations from the 2022 Housing Quality Task Force report has led to a reduction in blight caused by negligent landlords.

To further address housing issues in Rochester, Mayor Evans announced additional measures such as hiring new housing code enforcement inspectors and a dedicated housing attorney to hold landlords accountable through legal action. He stated that this zero-tolerance approach has already prompted some landlords to either improve their properties or sell them off and leave the Rochester market.

Ensuring that residents have access to secure housing is a crucial component of the city's strategy to promote prosperity. Mayor Evans acknowledged that many residents are struggling with high rent burdens, leaving little room for other basic needs. To address this, the city has adopted a comprehensive housing strategy that includes affordable housing, market-rate rental housing, and homeownership opportunities.
