Yonkers, NY ~ Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced that the City of Yonkers and the Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation are seeking nominations for the Yonkers Sports Hall of Fame. The call for nominations was made on January 23, 2024, and residents are encouraged to submit their nominations at www.YonkersNY.gov.
The Yonkers Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1966 to honor outstanding professionals and amateurs in the field of sports who have made significant contributions to the city. This includes both living and deceased individuals who have gained prominence in their sport or have brought honor and fame to Yonkers.
According to Mayor Spano, the Sports Hall of Fame is a tribute to the current and former residents who have brought glory to the city through their athletic achievements. He believes that their accomplishments should serve as symbols of hard work and inspiration for future generations.
Among the current members of the Sports Hall of Fame are championship kayaker Nancy Kalafus, track & field coach Dr. Richard A. Hill, Olympic swimmer Lea Loveless, and boxer Roger Donahue. These individuals have not only excelled in their respective sports but also demonstrated integrity, character, and sportsmanship.
