NEW YORK - Nyenta -- In 1960 cameras shined on brown girl, Ruby Bridges, as the first African American child to initiate desegregation in schools. Almost 70 years later, Lakeasha Williams echoes that shine, in schools and beyond, with the release of SHINE ON, BROWN GIRL.

In her new children's book, Williams introduces the world to Layla, a young girl of color who is raised to love herself and the skin she is in but doesn't always get that same love and appreciation shown back to her from others.

"Layla, came to me as a result of working with young children, witnessing the situations they still grapple with, and my Brown Girl school video that went viral after Kamala Harris became VP elect," says Williams.

Though written to motivate and inspire children, SHINE ON, BROWN GIRL has a message that goes beyond age. "The book itself is geared towards elementary school aged children," she explains, "however, the major topics such as the relevance of diversity, equity, and inclusion should be discussed through the college level."
