The Médoc, located in the Bordeaux region of France, is one of the most prestigious wine-producing areas in the world. With its deep-rooted history, renowned estates, and exceptional terroir, the wines of the Médoc have captivated collectors and enthusiasts alike for centuries.
The 1855 Classification: A Legacy of Excellence
One of the most defining moments in the history of Médoc wines was the establishment of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, which was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. This ranking of châteaux was based on the reputation and market price of their wines at the time. The classification recognized five tiers of Grand Cru Classé wines, primarily from the Médoc, with one notable exception: Château Haut-Brion, from the Graves region.

The classification remains largely intact today, a testament to its accuracy in predicting the enduring quality of these wines. Among the top estates listed in the classification, some have attained near-mythical status in the wine world. While adjustments have been made over the years, the First Growths (Premiers Crus) remain the pinnacle of Bordeaux winemaking:
- Château Lafite Rothschild
- Château Latour
- Château Margaux
- Château Mouton Rothschild (elevated to First Growth status in 1973)
- Château Haut-Brion (from Graves, but included in the classification)
