NEW YORK, April 15, 2024 ~ A new program has been launched today in East Africa, providing a significant opportunity for advocates who champion the bodily autonomy of adolescent girls. Women Deliver, a global leader in promoting gender equality and the bodily autonomy of girls and women, has announced the launch of its inaugural cohort for the Emerging Leaders for Change program in the region.
This two-year initiative aims to support young advocates by providing them with funding, resources, trainings, and access to decision-makers. The goal is to amplify their efforts in advocating for youth-centered solutions in national, regional, and global spaces to advance adolescent girls' bodily autonomy. The program will be launched annually in other regions on a rolling basis, with a focused approach that is regionally- and thematically-bound.
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Chair of Women Deliver's Board and former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, explains the importance of this program. "Women Deliver recognizes that adolescence is a crucial stage where girls often face limited opportunities that continue into adulthood," she says. "Through our Emerging Leaders for Change Program, we are committed to changing the life trajectories of adolescent girls by supporting advocates who can provide youth-centric solutions in sexual and reproductive health and rights."

East Africa was chosen as the inaugural region for this initiative due to its significant youth population and urgent needs. Leveraging a supportive environment for gender equality advocates and established regional partnerships, Women Deliver's mission is to ensure that every self-identifying girl and woman has full control over her body and life.
Applications for the 2024 East Africa Emerging Leaders Cohort will open on April 15th, 2024 and close on May 30th, 2024. The program welcomes individuals aged 15-29 from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda of all genders. However, there is a strong emphasis on those identifying as women/girls or LGBTQIA+. Applicants' advocacy should focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in their local communities, particularly in Women Deliver's three priority areas: universal health coverage, the climate crisis, and countering anti-rights movements. For more information, interested individuals can visit the application webpage.
Media inquiries can be directed to Kim Lufkin, Director of Communications at Women Deliver. This program is a crucial step towards empowering adolescent girls and promoting their bodily autonomy in East Africa and beyond.
