New Rochelle: Applications Now Open for Citizen Complaint Review Board

~ New Rochelle, NY - The City of New Rochelle has announced that they are currently seeking applicants to join the Citizen Complaint Review Board. This board will consist of seven members, with one appointed by the Mayor and six appointed by the City Council, one from each district. All appointments will be approved by the City Council.

The initial terms for board members will vary, with four serving three-year terms and three serving two-year terms. Members will receive an annual stipend of $1500, while the Chairperson will receive $2500. The Chairperson will be selected by both the City Council and Mayor from the seven appointments.

The main responsibilities of the CCRB include reviewing written civilian complaints and investigations, as well as issuing public reports on each complaint after both the Police Department's internal investigation and the CCRB's review are complete. The board will meet at least once a month, with a schedule to be determined by the Chairperson. Additionally, public meetings will be held at least once every quarter at City Hall, with an annual meeting also taking place.

In order to be considered for a position on the CCRB, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to impartiality, fairness, transparency, and public accountability. They must also undergo a background check and sign a confidentiality oath. It is important to note that individuals who have current or prior employment in law enforcement or have relatives who are current or prior law enforcement agents are not eligible for this position. Additionally, those who hold government office positions or are employees of the city cannot apply. Applicants must also not have any felony convictions within the past five years or be on parole or probation during this time period. They must also be 18 years of age or older and reside in New Rochelle.

Selected members will be required to undergo training including 25 hours at Citizens Police Academy, 9.75 hours at National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement, and 2 hours for an overview of New York State laws.

Interested individuals can submit their applications online or in person at the City Manager's Office in New Rochelle City Hall during business hours. The deadline for applications is March 7, 2025 at 4:30 PM.
