~ On the early morning of September 17, 2024, a dangerous situation unfolded in New Rochelle as a patient recently released from the Emergency Room stole an ambulance. The New Rochelle Police Department (NRPD) received a report from Empress Ambulance personnel at approximately 03:01 am, alerting them of the theft.

According to NRPD, officers quickly located the stolen ambulance on Lawn Avenue. However, when they attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled and a pursuit ensued. The chase led the ambulance into Eastchester, where both the Eastchester Police Department and Scarsdale Police joined in to assist.

During the pursuit, the stolen vehicle collided with police vehicles from both Eastchester and Scarsdale. Despite this, the suspect continued to evade capture and drove through several other towns including Scarsdale, Greenburgh, White Plains, and eventually into Irvington.

The chase finally came to an end when the stolen ambulance struck a utility pole in Irvington. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and given first aid before being transported to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation. Fortunately, he only sustained minor injuries and was later discharged.

Remarkably, no officers or citizens were injured during this incident and no NRPD vehicles were damaged. The NRPD commends their officers as well as the supporting agencies for their swift and effective response in resolving this dangerous situation. It was thanks to their collaborative efforts that a safe conclusion was reached.

The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Ernest Burkett of New Rochelle and has been charged with multiple offenses including reckless endangerment in the first degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the second degree, grand larceny in the second degree, unlawful fleeing a police officer in the third degree, and criminal mischief in the second degree.

The NRPD reminds citizens to always be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. They also urge individuals to refrain from engaging in dangerous and illegal behavior, as it not only puts themselves at risk but also endangers the lives of others.
