~ New Rochelle, NY- On February 20th, 2025, the City of New Rochelle held its annual Black History Month Recognition event at New Rochelle City Hall. The event honored Kelly Johnson Jr., Executive Director of the New Rochelle Youth Bureau, for his exceptional dedication and service to the community.
Mr. Johnson was recognized for his tireless efforts in empowering the youth of New Rochelle and creating opportunities for them. His impact on the city was celebrated by attendees including city officials, community leaders, residents, and members of the Youth Bureau and Board of Commissioners.
The evening began with an invocation by Bishop Fetson Leak followed by greetings from Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert, Council Member David Peters, and Deputy City Manager Todd Castaldo. Professor James Small gave a historic presentation and Vin Parise, Commissioner of Parks & Rec, presented Mr. Johnson with his award. The event was emceed by Orisha Jennings-Hudgins, Director of Housing.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Johnson expressed his gratitude for the recognition and hoped that his commitment to service would inspire others to follow in his footsteps. He also acknowledged those who have influenced him throughout his career.
Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Sam Gómez emphasized the importance of recognizing African Americans in the community. He stated that it is essential to celebrate their rich history and invaluable contributions not only in New Rochelle but also in the nation as a whole.
Gómez also thanked the Employee Resource Group for their help in organizing this event which serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to create a more inclusive and equitable community for all.
