~ Westchester County, NY - Seniors in Westchester County looking to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables while stretching their food budgets this summer and fall may be eligible for a special program. The Senior Farmers Market Program, funded by the Food and Nutrition Service division of the United States Department of Agriculture and Markets, in cooperation with the NY State Office for the Aging, NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, and the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, is offering Farmers Market Checkbooks to eligible individuals.
To qualify for the program, seniors must be 60 years of age or older and have a monthly income at or below $2,322 for a one-person household, $3,152 for a two-person household or $3,981 for a three-person household. The checkbooks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible seniors who plan to use them at participating farmers' markets.
Each checkbook has a value of $25 and contains individual Farmers Market Checks worth $5 each. However, farmers will not give change if a purchase is less than $5. Instead, they will add additional items of the recipient's choice to make up the difference.

The purpose of this program is to provide low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious fruits, vegetables, and herbs from local farmers' markets and community supported agriculture programs. It also aims to increase the consumption of locally grown food by expanding farmers' markets and community supported agriculture programs in the area.
The checkbooks will be distributed starting July 22nd at the Hugh Doyle Senior Center located at 94 Davis Avenue. This year's distribution times have been extended from 9-11am and 1-3pm Monday through Thursday. Eligible seniors must provide proof of age and residency in order to receive a booklet. Those who are unable to come in person can have their Power of Attorney provide proof on their behalf.
