November 8, 2024 ~ New Rochelle, NY - The City of New Rochelle is currently facing a high risk level for fire danger due to persistent dry weather and strong winds. This warning was issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) on November 8, 2024.
In addition, the National Weather Service has also declared a Red Flag Warning for the city. This temporary warning indicates the presence of dangerous conditions such as high temperatures, strong winds, low humidity levels, and dry fuel or drought conditions. These factors can contribute to new fires or cause existing fires to spread rapidly.
As a precautionary measure, all open fires in City parks and recreation areas have been prohibited until further notice. Residents and businesses are urged to refrain from any outdoor burning activities. In case of any brush fires, citizens are advised to immediately report them to 9-1-1.

The NYS DEC has also issued a drought watch for 15 counties in New York, including Westchester County where New Rochelle is located. To protect water resources in these regions, homeowners are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water usage and follow some simple tips provided by the department.
These tips include watering lawns only when necessary and using methods that avoid water waste. Homeowners can also reuse collected rainwater or water from dehumidifiers or air conditioners to water plants. Additionally, raising lawn mower cutting heights can help conserve water as longer grass has stronger roots and requires less watering.
Other measures suggested by the NYS DEC include using a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks and fixing any leaking pipes or faucets. These small steps can go a long way in conserving water resources during this drought watch period.
The City of New Rochelle urges its residents to take these warnings seriously and cooperate with the authorities in order to prevent any potential fire hazards or further depletion of water resources.
