~ New Rochelle, NY - On Friday, November 15, city officials, along with family, neighbors, and friends of the late New Rochelle City Council Member James C. Stowe, gathered for a special ceremony. The event marked the official renaming of Lemke Park in Rochelle Heights to James C. Stowe Park.

Stowe served as City Council Member for District 3 from January 2004 until his passing in August 2010. His dedication to his community and his family was remembered by those in attendance.

Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert spoke about Stowe's personal and professional accomplishments and the values he embodied: integrity, dedication, and a deep love for his community. She stated that renaming the park in his memory was a small gesture to ensure that his contributions would never be forgotten.

District 3 Council Member David Peters also expressed his gratitude for being able to serve in the shadow of such a wonderful public servant. He described Stowe as a man who commanded respect and admiration from all who knew him. Peters was grateful that Stowe's legacy would be permanently honored with the renaming of the park.

Parks and Recreation Commissioner Vin Parise also spoke about Stowe's dedication to community service, environmental advocacy, and youth mentoring. He believed that renaming the park was an appropriate tribute to honor Stowe's memory.

Stowe's brother Edward spoke on behalf of the family, expressing their comfort and inspiration knowing that others believed he deserved this honor. He shared that Stowe had a heartfelt compassion not just for New Rochelle but for all the land around it.

The recommendation to rename Lemke Place Park to James C. Stowe Park came from Jacqueline Graham-Mills, Elena Cowie, and Shelia Small, Esq. They believed it was a fitting way to honor someone who gave so much to their community. They hoped that this renaming would not only recognize Stowe's remarkable legacy but also inspire continued community engagement and stewardship.

Stowe was a distinguished member of the community, with an impressive list of personal and professional accomplishments. He was an Air Force veteran and held a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from New York Institute of Technology, a Master's of Science Degree in Operations Research from NYU, and a certification in Business Process Re-engineering from Boston University. In 1969, he married Roxie Gilmore, and they raised two children in New Rochelle.

After retiring from his successful career as Managing Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental Systems at Union Carbide, Stowe dedicated himself to serving the New Rochelle community. He volunteered for the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment and was eventually asked to run for City Council. As a councilman, he was known for his ability to work collaboratively with others and his belief in social and economic justice for all people. He fought for his constituents in District 3 as well as all residents of New Rochelle.

One of Stowe's most beloved initiatives was his role as Director and Co-Founder of the New Rochelle Lego League. This global program engages children in research, problem-solving, and engineering.

The renaming ceremony was a touching tribute to a man who made such a significant impact on his community. The newly named James C. Stowe Park will serve as a reminder of his dedication to service and inspire future generations to continue his legacy.
