~ New Rochelle, NY- The City of New Rochelle has announced that it is now accepting applications for individuals to join the newly formed Youth Justice Advisory Committee (YJAC). This committee, created by the City Council, aims to address issues surrounding youth justice in New Rochelle and strengthen relationships within the Youth Justice ECO-system.

Comprised of both youth and adult stakeholders, the YJAC will play a crucial role in providing support, resources, and policy ideas to improve the city's approach to youth justice. It will also serve as a platform for elevating youth voices and addressing their concerns and solutions.

The committee will consist of 15 members, appointed by the City Manager. This includes eight young adults, with at least five having been impacted by the criminal justice system. Special consideration will be given to outgoing members of the Justice Ambassadors Youth Council. Additionally, there will be three adult community members, one staff member from the City of New Rochelle (non-voting), one member of the New Rochelle City Council (non-voting), one staff member from the City School District of New Rochelle (non-voting), and one member of the New Rochelle Board of Education (non-voting).

Appointments to the YJAC will be for a term of three years and are unpaid volunteer positions. The committee will meet monthly and present their findings and proposed solutions to the City Council at least twice a year.

Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert expressed her support for this new initiative stating, "The establishment of the Youth Justice Advisory Committee is an important step in shaping a more responsive and effective justice system for our young people. By bringing together diverse voices, this committee will provide valuable insights and recommendations that promote positive outcomes for youth."

The city is encouraging community members who share their goals of enhancing public safety, providing opportunities for all young people in New Rochelle, and fostering intergenerational learning to apply for a position on the YJAC. Interested individuals can submit a resume and cover letter through the City's website or in person at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall.

Applications must be received by May 9th at 4:30 PM for consideration. The City of New Rochelle is looking forward to working with dedicated individuals who are passionate about improving youth justice in their community.
