~ New Rochelle Police Department honored the late Police Officer Kathleen O'Connor-Funigiello by naming their newest patrol boat, Marine 2, after her. The dedication ceremony took place on Monday, May 12 at the Harbor Patrol and was attended by city and police officials, family members, and various marine units.

Officer O'Connor-Funigiello was a dedicated volunteer who assisted in rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero after the tragic events of September 11th. She passed away in 2018 due to an illness related to her service. The dedication of Marine 2 serves as a lasting tribute to her commitment and sacrifice for the people of New Rochelle.

The state-of-the-art patrol boat was custom built for the waters of the Long Island Sound by SAFE Boats International. It is a 33-foot Full Cabin Defender class vessel equipped with advanced technology such as radiological detection equipment, side scan sonar, underwater 3D imaging, thermal imaging and night vision. It also has a fire suppression system and is capable of dive operations for the department's Dive Rescue Team. The majority of funding for Marine 2 was secured through a Federal Port Security Grant by NRPD Harbor Unit Sgt. Tim Childs.

According to New Rochelle Police Commissioner Robert Gazzola, dedicating police boats in honor of fallen officers is a tradition that reflects the deep respect and remembrance law enforcement agencies have for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He expressed gratitude for Officer O'Connor-Funigiello's life dedicated to service and unwavering commitment to the people of New Rochelle.

Officer O'Connor-Funigiello grew up in New Rochelle and joined the Police Department on January 25, 1998. She spent most of her career in the Police Services Division where she earned a Commendation Award. Later on, she was assigned as Warrant Officer in the Criminal Investigations Division. In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, she selflessly volunteered her time to assist other first responders at Ground Zero. She was honored at the 38th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service in Washington D.C. on May 15th, 2019.

The dedication of Marine 2 in honor of Officer O'Connor-Funigiello serves as a reminder of her bravery and dedication to serving her community. Her legacy will continue to protect and serve, even beyond her time in uniform. The New Rochelle Police Department is grateful for her service and will always remember her as a hero.
