~ Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that over $7.3 million will be allocated to municipalities across New York State as part of the Climate Smart Communities grant program. These grants aim to support local projects that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resilience to extreme weather events.
The projects, which were established in 2016 by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), will help New York achieve its emission-reduction targets under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. This act requires the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% below 1990 levels by 2050.
Governor Hochul praised the efforts of these local communities in addressing the climate crisis head on. She stated, "New Yorkers are all too familiar with the increased frequency of severe weather events caused by climate change, and I commend the work of these local communities to reduce emissions and address the crisis head on."

The DEC's Climate Smart Communities grant program supports municipalities in implementing climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation projects, as well as taking steps towards becoming certified Climate Smart Communities. Since its inception, over $69 million has been awarded to municipalities for local climate mitigation and adaptation projects.
The 2023 grant awards include a $1,130,000 grant for the City of New Rochelle. This project aims to upgrade existing stormwater infrastructure in the neighborhood of Ashland Street, East Place, Crestview Street, and Chatworth Place. The area is prone to surface flooding during heavy rainfall due to its sloped roads and lack of proper infrastructure. The project will install additional inlets and piping, upsize existing piping, and provide means for retention or detention in order to reduce or eliminate flooding and property damage during large storm events.
These investments in climate smart initiatives not only help build stronger and more resilient communities but also create green jobs and protect the environment for future generations. More information about the grant program can be found on DEC's website.
