New Rochelle: Senior residents celebrated at "HerStory" Women's History Month event

~ New Rochelle, NY- The City of New Rochelle celebrated Women's History Month by honoring its senior residents and members of the Hugh Doyle Senior Center at its third annual HerStory event on March 20, 2025. The event, held at the Greentree Country Club, was a day filled with activities including a brunch, music, vendors, a fashion show, flower arranging station, and raffles for gifts and services from local businesses.

City Manager Wilfredo Melendez expressed his excitement for the event stating, "Our third annual HerStory event embodies the true spirit of Women's History Month, honoring the strength, wisdom, and resilience of the senior women in our community. It is truly a celebration of their dedication- to careers, family, leadership and service- that has enriched the lives of those around them and strengthened our City as a whole."

The highlight of the event was a fashion show featuring twelve senior models from different areas of New Rochelle showcasing their favorite outfits. The show was kicked off by Mayor Ramos-Herbert and City Manager Wilfredo Melendez. The models were escorted by various city leaders including Deputy City Manager Todd Castaldo and Commissioners from departments such as Development, Police, Fire and Public Information.

The event was attended by 270 seniors from various communities in New Rochelle including Bethesda Community Enrichment Corps., Bracey Apartments, Carrington Arms, Garito Manor, Heritage Homes,Hugh Doyle Senior Center,Huguenot House,Larochelle Manor,Lincoln Towers ,Maple Center ,Maple Terrace,Meadow Lane,Parkside Place ,Queen City Towers,Rockwell Terrace ,Shiloh Senior Housing ,Soundview Apartments,and Washington House. Local businesses such as Araceli Flower Shop provided flowers for the event while DJ Fuego provided music. Non-profits such as American Red Cross,Montefiore Paratransit,and Westchester County Department of Social Services also had information tables to provide resources for New Rochelle's senior residents and their families. The event was sponsored by Montefiore who provided the DJ and photo booth, and organized by various city departments including Parks & Recreation, Human Resources, Development and Special Events.

The City of New Rochelle is dedicated to providing community programming, engagement opportunities, and city-wide resources throughout the year. The New Rochelle Office for the Aging offers a wide range of free services for seniors and their families including appointment scheduling, local transportation, and housing assistance. Members of the Hugh Doyle Senior Center can also participate in various programs such as arts and crafts, singing and dancing, exercise, gardening, card playing, educational and wellness seminars, museum trips and more.

The HerStory event was a true celebration of the senior women in New Rochelle who have contributed to the community through their dedication to careers, family, leadership and service. It was a day filled with joy and appreciation for these remarkable women who have enriched the lives of those around them. The City of New Rochelle looks forward to continuing to honor its senior residents throughout the year with various events and resources.
