~ In a unanimous decision, the City Council has voted to extend a temporary amnesty program for homeowners struggling with the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, which was set to expire in June 2023, will now run until June 2024.
The Tax Amnesty program aims to provide relief to struggling homeowners by waiving City interest and penalties on unpaid taxes. This will allow residents to focus on paying off the principal amount owed. Additionally, the City will work with property owners to create a payment plan for any outstanding balances.
Since its launch in March 2023, the program has already helped over 250 families become current with their taxes and remain in their homes. Many of these families were overcome with tears of relief upon learning that they no longer had to worry about their tax debt.

According to Finance Commissioner Edward Ritter, this program gives residents a chance to get back on their feet and preserve their homes. He also noted that while waiving interest may seem like a loss for the City, it actually helps improve cash flow and clear up outstanding balances without having to resort to the in-rem/foreclosure process.
For more information on the Tax Amnesty program, interested individuals can contact the Tax Office at (914) 654-2059. This extension provides much-needed support for struggling homeowners during these challenging times.
