~ Westchester County is gearing up for its final Household Recycling Day (HRD) events of 2024, providing residents with the opportunity to safely dispose of their household wastes. The events will take place on Saturday, November 2 at Playland Park in Rye and Saturday, November 9 at Westchester Community College in Valhalla.
The Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) will be overseeing the events, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring items such as household chemicals, electronics, appliances, and tires for proper disposal. They can also bring documents for shredding and expired or unwanted medications for safe disposal.
According to DEF, the following items will be accepted at the HRD events: properly labeled household chemicals such as cleaning products, automotive fluids (excluding motor oil), flammable liquids, polishes and waxes, fertilizers and pesticides, batteries (vehicle, rechargeable or button cell), textiles including footwear and clothing, latex and oil-based paint and wood stains, fluorescent light bulbs and CFLs, fire extinguishers, BBQ propane tanks (up to 20 lbs.), mercury-containing devices like thermometers and thermostats, electronic waste such as TVs and computer monitors/towers.

Residents are reminded that non-rechargeable alkaline and carbon zinc batteries can be safely discarded in the trash and should not be brought to the HRD events. Other items that will not be accepted include motor oil, smoke detectors, cell phones, explosives (flares, fireworks or ammunition), construction debris and hypodermic needles. Additionally, waste from businesses or institutions will not be accepted.
To avoid long wait times at the HRD events, residents can make an appointment at the County's Household-Material Recycling Facility (H-MRF) located at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. The H-MRF is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and accepts the same items as the HRD events. Appointments can be made by visiting the County's website or calling the Recycling Helpline.
For more information on what items are accepted at the HRD events, residents can visit www.westchestergov.com/recycling or call the Recycling Helpline at (914) 813-5425. They can also make an appointment at the H-MRF by visiting https://environment.westchestergov.com/faciliti... or calling (914) 813-5425.
In addition to these events, Westchester County offers various environmental programs and events throughout the year. Residents can stay updated by following DEF on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WestchesterCountyDEF.
With these final HRD events of 2024, Westchester County is providing its residents with a convenient and safe way to dispose of their household wastes, promoting a cleaner and healthier community for all.
