~ On Thursday, October 23, City officials and residents of the Heritage Homes neighborhood came together to celebrate the long-awaited opening of Winthrop Avenue. The street, which runs parallel to Lincoln Avenue, was originally split into two segments: one from Dewitt Place to the Hartley House Municipal Housing Project, and the other from Brook Street to North Avenue.
The idea for connecting Winthrop Avenue in its entirety was first conceived when the Hartley House towers, built in the 1940s, were replaced by the Heritage Homes neighborhood. This new design aimed to create a fully connected street that would serve as a central hub for the community.

Winthrop Avenue is not only important for its role in connecting the neighborhood, but it also borders Ryan Sinkfield Park which was dedicated two years ago. The recent work done on Winthrop Avenue included paving, making it ADA compliant with curb cuts, and improving drainage.
District 3 Council Member David Peters expressed his gratitude towards the City departments for their hard work in creating this vital street. He believes that Winthrop Avenue will not only bring neighbors closer together but also provide easier access to essential City services. Peters stated that this new addition will bring vibrancy to the Heritage Homes neighborhood and serve as a pathway to greater unity and convenience.
