~ Rochester, NY- Mayor Malik D. Evans and Monroe County Executive Adam J. Bello have announced the successful third anniversary of the Nurse Navigation program, which has significantly improved the delivery of emergency services in Rochester and Monroe County. Launched in January 2022, the program has been instrumental in connecting 911 callers with non-life-threatening conditions to the most appropriate care, ensuring that emergency services remain available for critical cases.
According to Mayor Evans, "Programs like Nurse Navigation are the future of emergency services and we are glad to be on the forefront. This program has allowed us to provide better care for patients, reduce strain on our emergency systems, and deliver meaningful cost savings for taxpayers."
Since its inception, the Nurse Navigation program has supported nearly 7,000 callers and has successfully reduced unnecessary emergency room visits while freeing up critical ambulance resources. In fact, almost 40% of those who called 911 were safely directed to alternative care options such as urgent care centers, virtual visits, and home care.

County Executive Bello also expressed his satisfaction with the program stating that "The Nurse Navigation program is truly a game-changer for improving access to healthcare in our community. It ensures patients get the care they need quickly while keeping emergency resources available for those who truly need them."
The Nurse Navigation program provides clinical guidance for 911 callers with specific complaints such as toothaches, skin problems, fever, and extremity injuries. The specially trained Nurse Navigators then determine the best options for their emergency care and provide personalized guidance along with referrals and no-cost transportation to outpatient clinics and urgent care centers. This also includes a pharmacy stop if medications are prescribed.
Residents who were contacted within 24 hours after their initial call have expressed overall satisfaction with their care. Additionally, the program has generated more than $7.3 million in potential savings from avoided emergency department visits.
The success of this program highlights its importance in improving emergency services and providing timely and appropriate care for patients. Mayor Evans and County Executive Bello are proud to have Nurse Navigation as a vital part of their community's healthcare system and look forward to its continued success in the future.
