~ Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced the launch of a new community engagement program, Neighbors In Action (NIA). The program aims to empower residents to come together and take purposeful action towards strengthening and improving their neighborhoods.
NIA is based on the successful Neighbors Building Neighborhoods (NBN) initiative, which was started in 1996 by former Rochester Mayor William A. Johnson Jr. NBN was recognized nationally as a model for government and civic partnerships, inspiring and supporting hundreds of projects across the city, from beautification initiatives to enhanced public safety.
According to Mayor Evans, the idea for NIA has been in the works since before he took office. He believes that NBN was an incredible program that is still being continued by some neighborhoods, but wanted to refresh the model and expand participation as the community's need for such a program has not changed. The mayor emphasizes that strengthening neighborhoods starts with residents coming together and taking action where they live. NIA aims to create a collective purpose and foster community pride by enabling residents to improve their surroundings, share their aspirations, and contribute to the overall progress of the city.

As part of the NIA initiative, residents and neighborhood organizations will have access to City resources and small grants to support community-driven projects. To ensure that the program meets the needs of all neighborhoods, the City is seeking input from community members through an online survey and four in-person public meetings.
The online survey can be accessed through the NIA website. The City encourages all residents to participate as their feedback will help design a program that best serves their neighborhoods.
In addition, four in-person public meetings will be held where residents can learn more about NIA and share personal insights about their neighborhood's needs. The meetings will take place at various locations throughout October:
- Thursday, Oct. 10 at Thomas P. Ryan R-Center on 530 Webster Ave.
- Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Arnett Branch Library on 310 Arnett Blvd.
- Thursday, Oct. 17 at David F. Gantt R-Center on 700 North St.
- Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Edgerton R-Center Stardust Ballroom on 41 Backus St.
The City encourages all residents to attend and be a part of shaping the NIA program.
For more information about NIA and upcoming meetings, visit the program's website or check for updates on the City's news page.
