~ Rochester, NY- Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced the opening of the city's first dedicated pickleball courts at Maplewood Park on Maplewood Drive. The decision to create these courts was made in response to the growing popularity of pickleball as a recreational sport.

In a statement, Mayor Evans expressed his excitement about providing opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy this fun and active pastime. He also emphasized the importance of keeping recreation facilities up to date with evolving interests in order to support an outstanding quality of life in Rochester.

City Councilmember Mitch Gruber, who advocated for the inclusion of dedicated pickleball courts at city recreation facilities, also spoke about the need for expanded infrastructure for racquet sports. He noted that there is no shortage of court space in Rochester, making it a wonderful opportunity to create dedicated pickleball courts at Maplewood Park.

The new pickleball courts were created by reconstructing and converting two former tennis courts. In addition, two existing tennis courts were restored and refurbished. The six new pickleball courts are smaller than traditional tennis courts and have different lines. They are also painted purple, green, and blue to distinguish them from the standard green and blue tennis courts.

Located in an area known as "Middle Maplewood," the courts are situated south of West Ridge Road and west of Lake Avenue near Seneca Parkway's eastern terminus. They are bounded by Riverside Street, Park View Street, and Maplewood Drive.

The public can access the pickleball courts on a first-come, first-served basis during park hours. However, they are not equipped with lighting for night use.

Pickleball has been around since the 1960s but gained widespread popularity during the pandemic due to its outdoor accessibility and ability to accommodate social distancing guidelines.

In addition to Maplewood Park's new pickleball courts, the city is also nearing completion of similar facilities at Farmington Park on Merchants Road. There are also plans to re-stripe some existing tennis courts to accommodate both pickleball and tennis.

The City of Rochester's dedication to providing diverse recreational opportunities for its residents and visitors is evident in the creation of these new pickleball courts. As the sport continues to grow in popularity, these facilities will serve as a valuable asset to the community.
