~ Rochester, NY - The City of Rochester has received a generous grant of $3 million from the USDA Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act to support Mayor Malik D. Evans' Tree Expansion and Beautification Initiative. This funding will greatly aid the city in achieving its goal of planting an additional 6,000 trees by 2025, with a focus on disadvantaged communities and ensuring a more equitable distribution of the urban tree canopy.
The grant will allow for the planting of 4,000 trees over the next two years, with 2,000 trees to be planted in 2024 and another 2,000 in 2025. This is in addition to the 3,200 trees that have already been planted through city funding. With this new grant, Rochester is on track to surpass its initial goal of 6,000 trees by the end of 2025, contributing to the health and beautification of neighborhoods throughout the city.
Mayor Evans expressed his excitement about this project saying, "I am thrilled to see our vision for a greener, more vibrant Rochester coming to life. Trees are not just beautiful; they are vital to the health and well-being of our neighborhoods, our environment and our future." He also emphasized the importance of this grant in helping to plant trees in areas that need them most.

The City's Forestry Division is responsible for overseeing this initiative and has identified specific planting zones that prioritize under-canopied and underserved neighborhoods. These new trees will not only contribute to ongoing beautification efforts but also improve environmental resilience and increase property values while promoting a healthier and greener urban landscape.
Rochester's Urban Forest Master Plan plays a critical role in guiding these efforts by ensuring that all trees are managed for long-term sustainability. The grant funding will help achieve the goals outlined in this plan which includes promoting biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change.
Residents are encouraged to participate in this program by requesting a tree to be planted in the public right-of-way by calling 311. The City will also provide assistance in caring for the newly planted trees.
Thanks to this $3 million grant, the City of Rochester is well on its way to creating a more beautiful and sustainable environment for all its residents. With the continued efforts of Mayor Evans and the support of the community, Rochester is sure to become a greener and healthier city for generations to come.
