A project that will transform Downtown Rochester is moving closer to reality as the City is again seeking the community's input tomorrow for the ROC the Riverway Aqueduct Reimagined and Riverfront Promenades project.
"The input of our residents and stakeholders is critical to moving this project forward," said Mayor Malik D. Evans. "This reimagining of the historic Aqueduct is an exciting collaboration that will reshape our Downtown for generations. We are seeking to collect the best ideas and the valuable feedback that our community members can provide us with as we build for a prosperous and equitable future."
An open house will take place, 1–4 p.m., Thursday, July 21, followed by a design workshop from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial, 1 War Memorial Square.
The Aqueduct Reimagined and Riverfront Promenades project will convert the historic Erie Canal Aqueduct and adjacent riverfront into a central gathering place while improving connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians downtown along the riverfront. Plans call for the removal of the upper vehicular deck of the Broad Street Bridge, and the creation of a unique, iconic public space on the lower level, where the Aqueduct once ran.

The overall project involves two independent elements: the Broad Street Bridge and Riverfront Promenades; and Street Improvements, which includes the Aqueduct Street Group, South Avenue and Stone Street.
Staff from the City's Architecture and Engineering Bureau will hold an open house and interactive design workshop to gather feedback on the various design aspects and phases of the project. Those phases include redesign of the surrounding street network to better serve motorized and non-motorized users, utility relocations, and, most importantly, transformation of the aqueduct and construction of riverfront promenades to create an iconic public space for all.
Members of the City's project team will also be available to provide information and answer questions about the various aspects of the project. The design workshop will begin with a formal presentation followed by a hands-on, collaborative exercise with the project team.
The street construction and infrastructure work necessary for Constellation Brands to move its headquarters and more than 300 employees to Downtown Rochester is on target to be substantially completed by the fall of 2023.
"I can't wait to join Constellation Brands employees to cut the ribbon on their new Downtown offices," said Mayor Evans. "We are moving ahead immediately with planning and executing the connections that need to be made in order to make the move successful."
Spanish language and ASL interpreters will be available at the workshop.
