~ Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced that the City Water Bureau has successfully submitted its Lead Water Service Line Inventory to the New York State Department of Health. This marks a significant achievement in meeting the first major milestone of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) lead in drinking water regulations.
In addition to the submission, the City will begin notifying all customers with service lines that have been identified as containing lead or unknown material. These letters will provide helpful information for residents to identify when their street is scheduled to have its lead service lines replaced and how they can minimize lead in their drinking water.
Mayor Evans expressed his satisfaction with the progress being made, stating, "We are making tremendous strides in removing every lead water service line. As we do so, we are also providing residents with the necessary information to ensure their drinking water is as healthy and safe as possible." He also highlighted Rochester's leadership in this area, stating that the city is a national leader in removing lead from its municipal drinking water supply.

The inventory and notices are part of Rochester's "Get the Lead Out Together" program, which aims to remove all lead-containing water service lines by 2030. Residents can find more information about this nationally recognized program on the city's website at www.cityofrochester.gov/lead. The website allows residents to look up the material of their water service line, learn about water quality, and receive updates on current lead service line replacement projects.
Starting November 1st, approximately 13,000 customers whose water service lines contain lead will receive notices by mail. Another 3,300 customers whose service lines were previously downstream of a lead service and 17,000 customers with unknown material service lines will also receive notices. However, customers whose service lines are made from materials that do not pose a risk of lead exposure, such as copper or plastic, will not receive a notice.

These efforts are in line with the EPA's requirements and are part of a national movement to remove lead materials from all communities. In January 2023, Mayor Evans participated in a panel discussion on local concerns at the White House Lead Pipe Summit.
To date, the City has replaced over 8,100 lead service lines and is on track to remove nearly 3,000 more per year. This progress has been made possible by more than $100 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, with support from the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Environmental Facilities Corp.
The City of Rochester remains committed to ensuring safe and healthy drinking water for all its residents. With continued efforts and support, they are confident in achieving their goal of removing all lead-containing water service lines by 2030.
