~ Rochester, NY- J.U.S.T. L.A.W., an initiative aimed at educating city students about the criminal justice system and promoting understanding between youth and those who administer the law, has officially launched its seventh year. The program, which stands for Justice, Understanding and Societal Trust (J.U.S.T.) and Literacy, Attendance and Writing (L.A.W.), will involve nearly 2,000 students from 24 middle schools in the Rochester City School District.
The first part of the program, J.U.S.T., will provide students with the opportunity to engage with judges from the New York State Court 7th Judicial District. This outreach aims to foster positive relationships between youth and the justice system. The second part of the program, L.A.W., focuses on improving students' understanding of the court system through reading, research, and analysis. It also aims to teach them how to express their concerns in writing and emphasize the value of education and school attendance.

As part of their participation in J.U.S.T. L.A.W., students will be required to write a 250-word essay on the topic "What Justice Means to Me." They will also have access to mentorship opportunities provided by members of the Rochester Black Bar Association, who will share insights about careers in the legal field.
Mayor Malik D. Evans expressed his pride in the youth participants and gratitude towards partners for engaging in such an important topic for both individuals and the city as a whole. He emphasized that middle school is a critical stage for young people and that developing positive relationships with the justice system at this age can lay a strong foundation for their future.
Honorable Judge William K. Taylor, Administrative Judge of the 7th Judicial District, also spoke about the significance of this program. He stated that by bringing judges into classrooms and students into courthouses, they are creating a pathway for learning, engagement, and inspiration. He believes that this initiative reflects their commitment to demystifying the legal process and empowering young minds to think critically about justice and their roles as future leaders.
