~ Starting Monday, June 24, residents of the Rochester area will have more options to beat the summer heat as two popular swimming spots open for the season. The Genesee Valley Park (GVP) Sports Complex Outdoor Pool and Durand Eastman Beach will both be welcoming visitors looking to cool off.
The GVP pool, located at 131 Elmwood Ave, will have a varied schedule from June 24 to July 7. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and then again from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on weekdays. In the evenings, it will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On weekends, the pool will offer free swimming from noon to 3:45 p.m.
For those looking for a more structured swim experience, adult lap swim will also be available at designated times throughout the week. This is open to individuals ages 18 and up and is free during certain hours on weekdays and available for a small fee on weekends.
During Cool Sweeps, which is a city-wide initiative aimed at providing relief during hot weather, the GVP pool will have extended hours from noon to 8 p.m., with regular admission fees applying.
From July 8 through September 2, the GVP pool's schedule will change slightly with weekday hours being from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. and then again in the evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On weekends, it will continue to offer free swimming from noon to 3:45 p.m., along with adult lap swim at designated times.

Admission fees for the GVP pool are $1 for youth ages 17 and under and $3 for adults unless otherwise noted above. Season passes are also available for purchase at $40 each and children ages five and under can enter for free when accompanied by an adult.
The GVP Sports Complex, located in Genesee Valley Park, offers more than just a pool. It is an all-season facility with amenities such as an outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool complete with a water slide, as well as a ramp and portable lift for individuals with disabilities. The complex also has a full locker room for visitors to use. For more information about the GVP Sports Complex, individuals can call 428-7888.
Durand Eastman Beach, located at 1250 Lakeshore Blvd., is another popular spot for swimming in Rochester. This beach boasts 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario waterfront and is situated within Durand Eastman Park. The park itself offers stunning views of steep wooded slopes, valleys, small lakes, and various wildlife.
To ensure that the beach is open for swimming and to check daily water conditions, visitors can call the Monroe County Beach Information Line at (585) 753-5887. This hotline is updated each morning.
For those interested in participating in aquatic activities beyond just swimming, the City of Rochester also offers spray parks and spray features at various locations throughout the city. These are currently open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and can be found at Carter Street R-Center, Edgerton R-Center, David F. Gantt R-Center, Humboldt R-Center, Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, Roxie Ann Sinkler R-Center, and Tyshaun Cauldwell R-Center for Hope.

On Sunday June 16th, Mayor Evans announced the initiation of Cool Sweeps operations from Monday June 17th to Friday June 21st. During this time, various city facilities including R-Centers, Durand Eastman Beach, pools, spray and splash parks, and some branch libraries may have extended hours.
