~ Rochester, NY- In a press conference held today, Mayor Malik D. Evans was joined by City and County leaders to provide an update on the recent shooting incident at Maplewood Park. The Mayor announced three upcoming events aimed at connecting community members with vital mental health support systems.
"We will not tolerate destructive behavior and we refuse to lower our standards of what is acceptable," stated Mayor Evans. "Instead, we will raise them by addressing the trauma that incidents like this cause and providing necessary support to our community members."
Dr. April Aycock, the Monroe County Director of Mental Health Services, expressed the County's unwavering commitment to supporting the City's efforts. The County's Forensic Intervention Team (FIT) will be collaborating with the City's Person In Crisis (PIC) team and BreatheDeep, a city partner, to offer mental health services to those affected by the shooting at Maplewood Park.
"Monroe County's Forensic Intervention Team (FIT) is dedicated to providing critical mental health support to our community, especially during times of crisis," said Dr. Aycock. "The tragic incident at Maplewood Park has left deep scars on many individuals and it is our responsibility to help heal these wounds. By working together with the City, we can ensure that anyone impacted by this tragedy receives compassionate care and access to longer-term help as needed."

Dr. Shirley Green, City Commissioner of the Department of Recreation and Human Services, emphasized the impact of this incident on the community. "Dozens of people were present when Tyasia Manning and Phylicia Council were killed, and many more knew and loved them," she said. "We may never fully recover from this tragedy but by coming together, we can work towards healing from the trauma it has caused."
To provide immediate support and connect individuals with longer-term resources, the City will be hosting three free events for Rochester residents at various R-Centers. These events will have counselors from PIC, FIT, and BreatheDeep available to assist those in need.
The events will take place on Tuesday, August 6th from 5-7 p.m. at Edgerton R-Center, Wednesday, August 7th from 5-7 p.m. at Carter R-Center, and Thursday, August 8th from 5-7 p.m. at Thomas P Ryan R-Center.
"We refuse to normalize violence," stated Mayor Evans. "While the Rochester Police Department and our law enforcement partners work towards addressing the perpetrators of violence, we will also work together with the County and community partners to address the trauma that violence leaves behind."
The City and County leaders are determined to provide necessary support and resources to help the community heal from this tragic incident. They urge all residents to take advantage of these upcoming events and seek help if needed.
