~ Rochester, NY - As the City of Rochester prepares for more snowfall this week, Mayor Malik D. Evans is urging citizens to take necessary precautions and follow regulations to ensure safe travel. The city's snow-clearing operations are currently underway and will continue as needed.
Mayor Evans emphasized the importance of driving cautiously and giving plows enough space to effectively clear the streets. He also reminded residents to adhere to posted alternate-side parking regulations.
In a statement released today, Mayor Evans outlined the city's winter weather operations and citizen responsibilities. City crews are responsible for plowing major and minor arterial streets, while contractors handle residential streets. Streets are typically plowed when snow accumulations reach 3 inches.
To combat ice, salt is applied on main arterial streets and some secondary roadways with special features such as schools, bus routes, bridges, and hills. However, residential streets generally do not receive salt treatment.

Sidewalks are also a priority for the city during winter weather. They are plowed when there is at least 4 inches of new snow accumulation. Property owners are responsible for removing any remaining snow and ice from their sidewalks.
For real-time updates on snow plow operations, residents can use PlowTrax which is available on the city's website at www.cityofrochester.gov/plowtrax/.
In addition to following regulations and keeping sidewalks clear, Mayor Evans encouraged citizens to check on their neighbors who may be homebound and offer to shovel their sidewalks or walkways.
It is important for residents to note that shoveling or plowing snow from private property onto sidewalks, roads or fire hydrants is illegal.
