~ Today, Mayor Malik D. Evans was joined by Rochester City School District Superintendent Dr. Carmine Peluso, Reconnect Rochester Interim Director Mary Staropoli, and other administration leaders to urge Rochester area motorists to stay cautious and alert as students head back to school next week.
Mayor Evans expressed his concern for the safety of students and urged drivers to give themselves extra time to travel safely. "The start of the new school year not only brings school buses and young pedestrians, but also more traffic on the roads," said Mayor Evans. "Morning and afternoon commuters should keep this in mind and give themselves extra time to travel safely to ensure children stay safe."
The City has provided National Safety Council suggestions for back-to-school traffic safety. Schools often have very specific drop-off procedures for the school year that drivers should be aware of for the safety of all kids. Drivers should not double park as it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles, nor should they load or unload children across the street from the school. Carpooling is encouraged in order to reduce the number of vehicles at the school. If driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if driving behind a car as it is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. The area 10 feet around a school bus is considered most dangerous for children; drivers should stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus. Drivers should also be alert as children often ignore hazards and take risks when crossing streets or intersections. Blocking crosswalks when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn forces pedestrians into moving traffic which can be dangerous; always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign when in a school zone with flashing lights. Finally, drivers should never pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians nor honk or rev their engine to scare pedestrians even if they have right of way.
