Rochester: Mayor Evans to celebrate Black Heritage with slate of programming

~ Rochester, NY - Mayor Malik D. Evans and the City of Rochester's Black Heritage Committee have announced that early bird tickets for the 2025 City of Rochester Black Heritage Gala are now on sale. The gala will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

This annual event serves as the culmination of the Committee's Black History celebrations and will highlight this year's theme, "African Americans and Labor." Mayor Evans expressed his excitement for the event, stating, "Each year, we take special time to honor the contributions of Black Americans, and this year, we focus on their significant impact in unions and labor rights."

The City will kick off its Black History celebrations with a Gospel Concert by the School of the Arts Choir at 12 noon on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at City Hall. This will be followed by an Evening of Art and Jazz at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 also at City Hall. The Evening of Art and Jazz will feature an exhibit featuring local artists in the City Hall Link Gallery, a live jazz performance, and a food tasting.

Throughout 2025, the City's Black Heritage Committee will host various events including another Gospel Concert by Strings for Success on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at City Hall; a performance by Akoma and Voices of Thunder on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church; and a keynote address by Tracey Harrison from Upstate 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East on Friday, Feb. 21 at City Hall.

Other events include the Black Heritage Youth Gala on Thursday, March 13 (location to be determined), and the Juneteenth Block Party and Flag Raising outside City Hall on Wednesday June 18.

The highlight of these celebrations will be the Black Heritage Gala on Saturday April 12 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Early bird tickets are currently on sale for $90 until Feb. 7, after which they will be $100. Tickets can be purchased at City Hall or online with a service charge of $7.88.

The City of Rochester's Black Heritage Committee invites the entire community to join in celebrating the contributions and impact of Black Americans in labor and beyond. For more information on these events, visit the Celebrate Black Heritage page on the City's website.
