The 2024 ~ The 2024-2025 season for Thursday Thinkers: Insights into Rochester is set to begin next week, with the first of three discussion forums aimed at helping parents support their children's academic success and college ambitions. The series, hosted by the City's Department of Recreation and Human Services (DRHS), will feature discussions with representatives from government and community agencies, programs, and other resources.

The first forum, titled "Deciphering RCSD School Choice and the Charter School Lottery," will take place on Thursday, October 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rochester Community Sports Complex. Dr. Shanai Lee, executive director of Rochester Education and Development for Youth (READY), will be the presenting partner for this event.

During the forum, participants will learn how to navigate the process of selecting the best public-school option for their child. This includes understanding which RCSD school serves their neighborhood, as well as citywide schools with specialized programs and academic offerings. The discussion will also cover information on the charter school lottery and how to use the READY School Finder internet search engine to access information on all public-school options in an accessible format.

Thursday Thinkers aims to provide adult- and family-enrichment through discussions on various topics related to education. The events will be held on at least two Thursday evenings each month at a City R-Center or recreation facility. Each month will have a different theme.

Following the first forum on October 10, two more discussions are scheduled to take place at the Rochester Community Sports Complex on October 17 and October 24 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

On October 17, the topic will be "Preparing Black Scholars for the College Application Season." Taurean Uthman, Vice President of Youth Education and Development at Urban League of Rochester's Black Scholars program, will lead this session's conversation. The focus will be on the challenges and opportunities for Black students during the college application process.

The final forum on October 24 will cover "Uncovering the Mystery of Scholarships and Financial Aid During the College Application Season." Tawana Jackson and Phil Hounshell from the Rochester Education Foundation will lead this discussion, which will provide information on various scholarship and financial aid opportunities available to students. This includes FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), CSS Profile, Excelsior Scholarship, Rochester Institute of Technology's Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars, and University of Rochester's Rochester Promise.

Thursday Thinkers is a valuable resource for parents looking to support their children's academic success and college ambitions. With informative discussions led by experts in the field, these forums are not to be missed.
