~ Rochester, NY - Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced that the city will once again have several Frederick Douglass statues on public display after undergoing extensive repair and refurbishment. These statues, originally created by artist Olivia Kim for the "Year of Douglass" Bicentennial Commemoration in 2018, were previously on display across Rochester but had to be taken down due to weather damage and general wear.
In 2023, the City of Rochester acquired 10 of these statues to ensure they remained accessible to the public. With the help of Kim, the City has repaired and restored them and is now ready to return them to the community. However, in an effort to protect the fiberglass statues from further damage, they will now be placed at indoor locations with one exception.
During a press conference held today, Mayor Evans unveiled the one statue that will be placed outdoors at Aqueduct Park on 47-59 E. Main St. This location holds significance as it is near the Talman Building where Frederick Douglass once operated his newspaper, The North Star.

Currently, two other statues are on display at the Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County on 115 South Ave., and at the City's Honorable Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services on 57 St. Paul St. These locations are open to the public during normal hours of operation.
The remaining seven statues are in their final stages of repair and restoration and will soon be installed at various indoor locations throughout the city, including one at City Hall.
Mayor Evans expressed his excitement about having these statues back in the community, stating that "the legacy of Frederick Douglass is an inspiration to us all as we work together to build a safe, equitable and prosperous future for Rochester." He also mentioned that this is just the first batch of many more Frederick Douglass statues to come.
The return of these iconic statues serves as a reminder of the impact and legacy of Frederick Douglass, a prominent figure in Rochester's history. The City looks forward to sharing these statues with the public once again and honoring the life and contributions of this remarkable man.
