NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 2024 ~ Shawmut Design and Construction, a leading national construction management firm with a $2 billion portfolio, has announced the expansion of its Large Project Division in the New York Metro region. This expansion includes the addition of key hires who bring decades of experience in commercial, healthcare, and large vertical projects.
Among the new team members are Kasia Mickowska, Thomas Howard, and Brian Troast. Mickowska, a 23-year industry veteran, joins as project executive. Howard, with 40 years of experience in new construction and renovation markets, takes on the role of senior MEP manager. Troast has been promoted to senior director of construction operations after joining Shawmut a year ago as senior project executive.
These additions to the Large Project Division are part of Shawmut's aggressive strategy to increase its market share in large-scale projects. The firm first began building out this division in 2022 with the hiring of Charlie Avolio as head of major projects. Avolio brings nearly four decades of experience in New York City construction to his role.

David Margolius, executive vice president of Shawmut's New York Metro region, expressed excitement about the new team members and their potential impact on the company's capabilities and technical expertise. "As a 100% employee-owned company in a client-service business," Margolius said, "our people are our value to clients."
In his new role as senior director of construction operations, Troast will be responsible for leading teams through every phase of work and ensuring technical growth within the division. He brings over 20 years of industry experience to this position and has worked on iconic projects across New York City such as One Vanderbilt and One World Trade Center.
Mickowska joins Shawmut from Tishman where she managed ground-up towers and major healthcare projects for clients such as NYU Langone Health and NYC Health + Hospitals. As project executive at Shawmut, she will oversee the entire office and field teams and act as the key liaison for clients to ensure their goals are met. Mickowska is an active member of several industry organizations, including the American Society for Health Care Engineering and the Women's Builder Council.

Howard, with his extensive engineering and construction knowledge, will lead MEP budgeting efforts as senior MEP manager. He has previously worked on projects for healthcare facilities such as NYU Langone Health, Northwell Health, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.
The expanded Large Project Division works closely with Shawmut's preconstruction team, which has recently added several new members including estimator Vimalkumar Patel, senior estimators Bobby Burgess and Ravi Patel, and chief estimator Kenneth Perry.
Shawmut's recent projects in New York City include St. John's University's new St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, life science and academic projects at Columbia University and New York-Presbyterian, Taconic Partners' life sciences hub at the Hudson Research Center, renovations at Barclays Center, Time and Tide at 360 Park Avenue South, and the ongoing renovation of New York Public Library's Aguilar Branch.
With these new additions to its Large Project Division and a strong preconstruction team in place, Shawmut is well-positioned to continue its growth in the New York Metro region. As a company that values its employees' expertise and client satisfaction above all else, Shawmut is confident that these new hires will contribute greatly to their success in delivering high-quality construction management services.
