EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. - Nyenta -- Mora's Fine Wine & Spirits, located in East Setauket, Long Island, NY, loves a good bottle with a good backstory — and few spirits are as rich in history, flavor, and diversity as rum. This cane-derived delight has traveled across centuries, continents, and cultures, developing a multitude of identities along the way. From the molasses-heavy dark rums of the Caribbean to the grassy brightness of French-style rhum agricole, this is a spirit that truly speaks in many dialects.

So grab your cutlass (metaphorically, of course), and let's set sail through the captivating history and many faces of rum. We'll highlight some of our favorite producers (hello, El Dorado, Planteray, Barbancourt, and Goslings) and finish off with a Rum Old Fashioned that'll make your tiki bar proud.

As sugar plantations flourished in the Caribbean, so did molasses — a sticky byproduct of sugar production. Enterprising plantation workers discovered that fermenting molasses created a crude alcohol. Distilling it resulted in a far more palatable (and potent) spirit: rum …
