WASHINGTON, Feb. 20, 2024 ~ On Thursday, February 15, 2024, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced a $25.5 million settlement to be paid by Lincare Inc., a medical equipment supplier, for their fraudulent billing practices. The case was initiated in 2017 by Whistleblowers International (WBI) and The Piacentile Law Firm LLP, formerly known as the Brian Krauss Law Firm, in Washington D.C. The two firms were co-counselled by Susman Godfrey and Motley Rice.
According to the press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Lincare Inc. had knowingly sought payment from patients who were no longer using their respiratory devices, in violation of billing rules. This action not only defrauded patients but also threatened the financial integrity of federal health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
