NEW YORK - Nyenta -- Melissa was facing leukemia for the second time in two years. When doctors told her she would need a bone marrow transplant, she and her husband had to uproot their lives in Arkansas and relocate to Oklahoma City for at least 100 days.

The treatment was necessary, but costly. Her husband, now acting as a full-time caregiver, had to give up work to be by her side. As medical appointments multiplied, their income disappeared, and everyday expenses became a mounting source of stress. "Every trip to the grocery store became a source of anxiety," she said.

That's when Melissa was connected to the Icla da Silva Foundation. a nonprofit created in memory of a young girl from Brazil who lost her battle with leukemia because there were no donors available.

The Foundation provided emergency funds for gas and groceries—basic essentials that helped the couple get through a critical period. That support gave Melissa the breathing room to focus on healing, instead of worrying how they would get by.

The Icla da Silva Foundation supports patients who need a bone marrow or cord blood transplant but are held back by financial, emotional, and logistical barriers. For many, that means help with housing during long stays near a transplant center. For others, it's assistance with transportation, meals, or caregiver support. Every case is different, but the goal is always the same: make sure patients can access treatment and hold on through the hardest parts of the journey.

For Melissa, it meant the difference between life and death. "Without a program like this," she said, "I wouldn't be alive today!"
