LONDON, April 24, 2025 ~ In a groundbreaking collaboration, World Chess and the Algorand Foundation have released a whitepaper outlining a new blockchain-based system that aims to revolutionize the way global sports organizations, including chess, manage credentials. The paper was co-authored by Grandmaster Evgenij Miroshnichenko, along with representatives from both World Chess and the Algorand Foundation.
The timing of this announcement is significant as chess has recently seen a surge in popularity due to its portrayal in popular television series on Netflix and the BBC. Additionally, the youngest-ever world chess champion will be crowned in 2024 and chess will be included in the Esports World Cup for the first time later this year.
If implemented, this new system would allow chess players to have complete control over their identity and credentials across all platforms and organizations with just one decentralized ID. This means they can easily transfer their achievements, records of play, rankings, and rewards from online platforms to in-person games and tournaments. This not only simplifies the process for players but also reduces tournament application times significantly.

One of the main benefits of this proposed system is its ability to ensure fair play. As chess becomes more integrated into esports and online competitions, concerns about cheating using AI programs or player fraud (one player representing another) have risen. With this new system, players' integrity can be verified, including whether they have been banned for cheating on any other platform. This not only ensures credibility in competitions but also protects players' privacy by only sharing relevant identity data without revealing sensitive information like passports.
Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess, believes that "chess needs its version of a global e-version of a driver's license." He sees this as a necessary step for such a global game and believes that both players and organizers will benefit greatly from it.
Bruno Martins, principal architect at the Algorand Foundation and co-author of the whitepaper, also emphasizes the importance of this initiative beyond just chess. He believes that it has the potential to shape the future of fair play and verifiable achievements in all sports and esports.

The market for esports is estimated to reach $4.8 billion by 2025, with nearly 900 million players by 2029. This new system could greatly benefit this growing industry by providing better cross-platform registration for online and in-person competitions.
The full whitepaper and more information about this open-source system can be found on the World Chess website. Interested parties, including chess platforms, esports organizations, and others, are encouraged to get involved by contacting the project team.
This collaboration between World Chess and the Algorand Foundation showcases the potential of blockchain technology in revolutionizing how sports organizations manage credentials.
