MALTA, N.Y. ~ Malta, N.Y. - Wright Electric, a company dedicated to decarbonizing transportation through electric airplanes and ships, has recently been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) for their innovative work on developing an ultra-energy-dense aluminum battery and artificial intelligence electrolyte screening system. This contract is part of the ARPA-E's Pioneering Railroad, Oceanic and Plane Electrification with 1K energy storage systems (PROPEL-1K) program.
According to Wright Electric's CEO Jeff Engler, "ARPA-E is continuing to catalyze entire new industries with the PROPEL-1K program." He expressed excitement about working with Columbia University to push the boundaries of battery technology and contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.
Founded in 2016, Wright Electric has been collaborating with leading groups such as NASA, Y Combinator, The U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy, and the U.S. Department of Defense in their mission to decarbonize transportation. In October 2023, they launched their battery program after years of stealth development. The company's proprietary batteries are designed to be four times more energy dense than lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles. This breakthrough would enable the electrification of hard-to-decarbonize transportation sectors such as electric aircrafts with 100 passengers and container ships.

Wright Electric's industry-leading 2 megawatt (MW) powertrain recently achieved a significant milestone by completing 43,000 ft of simulated altitude testing without partial discharge. This accomplishment further solidifies their position as a leader in developing sustainable energy solutions for transportation.
The company's Automated Experimentation with Radical Electrochemical Systems (AERES) technology utilizes a combination of systematic screening and open-source hardware to rapidly screen electrolytes for these ultra-energy-dense batteries. Engler explains, "It is straightforward to construct an aluminum battery with household ingredients, but it is hard to make one that has the efficiency and high power output necessary for vehicles."
Wright Electric's participation in the PROPEL-1K program will provide additional support for the development of these groundbreaking batteries. With their potential to revolutionize decarbonization in the transportation industry, Wright Electric's work is garnering attention and recognition from various organizations.
