~ Yonkers, NY - In a continued effort to promote sustainability and reduce waste, Mayor Mike Spano and Yonkers Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissioner Thomas Meier announced the city's annual compost distribution for residents. The event was held at the Yonkers Recycling Center on April 22, 2025.
The city is offering 30 cubic yards of free compost to residents starting today at the Yonkers Recycling Center located at 735 Saw Mill River Road. Mayor Spano expressed his pride in Yonkers' commitment to sustainability, stating that by recycling food scraps to create compost, the city is creating a cleaner and greener environment. He encouraged residents to take advantage of this opportunity and use the compost for their spring plantings.
The compost being distributed is a result of the City of Yonkers' residential food scrap recycling program, which has collected over 37 tons of food scraps this season. Residents are required to bring proof of residency and a bucket to fill with the free compost. The distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last from Mondays to Saturdays between 7:30AM and 4:15PM.

The successful home food scrap recycling program was launched by the City of Yonkers in 2022, providing residents with household food scrap recycling kits for storing and dropping off food scraps at the Yonkers Recycling Center. The program has since expanded to include curbside collection for over 250 households and is continuously growing citywide.
Commissioner Meier emphasized the environmental benefits of this program, stating that it helps reduce waste in landfills and saves taxpayer dollars by avoiding trash incineration. He encouraged more residents to participate in food scrap recycling as it not only protects the environment but also provides them with high-quality compost that improves soil health.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins congratulated the City of Yonkers on the success of its food waste recycling program. He acknowledged the city's efforts in building awareness and increasing participation, which has led to this compost giveaway event. Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) Commissioner Vincent Kopicki also commended the city for taking advantage of the county's Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal program (RFSTAD), which makes it affordable for municipalities to offer food waste recycling to their residents.
Residents can purchase Food Scrap Collection Kits for $20 at the Yonkers Recycling Center from Mondays to Saturdays between 7:30AM and 4:15PM. For more information on the City's Food Scrap Recycling program, visit www.yonkersny.gov/foodscraps.
