YONKERS, NY ~ Yonkers, NY - As the federal changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility are set to take effect on November 1, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano held a press conference today to address the potential impact on the community. Standing alongside public officials, city department heads, and community organizations, Mayor Spano urged residents to take action against hunger.

The anticipated policy shift may leave many families without sufficient support, increasing the risk of hunger across the community. In response, Mayor Spano called for unity and encouraged Yonkers residents to donate non-perishable food items to Feeding Westchester, a lifeline for thousands of families in the region. To support this effort, donation boxes will be placed throughout the city for collection.

"In the face of these benefit changes, we must come together as a community," said Mayor Mike Spano. "Feeding Westchester is a lifeline for thousands of families, and now more than ever, they need our help to meet the growing demand. Whether you're a resident, a business owner, or a community leader, you have the power to make a difference. Let's show what Yonkers is made of."

Mayor Spano also expressed his disappointment in the delay and uncertainty caused by political gridlock in Washington. "Our representatives need to act now and get back to work to resolve this issue," he stated. "You can't play chess with people's lives when their well-being is on the line. Here in Yonkers, we see the ripple effects - from delayed federal support to uncertainty for those who depend on vital services. Our residents expect leadership, not gridlock."

According to data from Yonkers Public Schools and Office for the Aging, a significant portion of Yonkers' population is economically disadvantaged. Of 24,000 students in Yonkers Public Schools, 18,000 have been identified as economically disadvantaged. Additionally, approximately 12% of older adults in Yonkers live in poverty.

To facilitate donations, food bins will be available at various locations throughout Yonkers, including City Hall, the Yonkers PAL, and all three public libraries. Tami Wilson, Chief Operating Officer of Feeding Westchester, expressed her gratitude for the support from local government and the community in the fight against hunger.

"I can't imagine the stress and anxiety our neighbors are feeling right now with the loss of federal paychecks and uncertainty about SNAP benefits," said Wilson. "To worry about where your next meal will come from, especially as we approach a holiday centered on food, gratitude, love, and family is something no one should ever have to face. We are fortunate to have unyielding support from our local government and community partners."

Residents are encouraged to donate shelf-stable items such as canned vegetables, beans, pasta, rice, peanut butter, and whole grain cereal. Donations will be accepted through November 21st.

Mayor Spano also extended an invitation to local organizations, businesses, and faith communities to join this citywide initiative. Those interested in participating or hosting a donation site can contact Dr. Dwanita Crosby at the Mayor's Public and Community Affairs Office.

The City of Yonkers is the third largest city in New York State and Westchester County's largest city. With over 40 diverse suburban neighborhoods and a rich history dating back to its settlement by Dutchman Adriaen Van Der Donck in 1646, Yonkers has evolved into a major trading and industrial center. It is also home to the largest film production studios in the Northeast and has been dubbed "Hollywood on Hudson." Despite its size and urban setting, Yonkers boasts a low crime rate and a vibrant arts district with over 80 local parks for residents to enjoy.
