Yonkers, NY ~ Yonkers, NY - As temperatures continue to soar in the region, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced a citywide initiative to provide relief for residents facing extreme heat. The initiative will be implemented starting Monday, June 23 and will include designated Cooling Centers across the city.
Mayor Spano emphasized the importance of protecting the health and safety of all residents, especially the most vulnerable. "By partnering with the Yonkers Public Schools District and the Yonkers Public Libraries, we're able to extend resources where they're most needed and ensure no one is left without a place to stay cool," he stated.
To support this effort, the Yonkers Public School District will be implementing half-day schedules for the duration of the heat advisory. Select school buildings, along with Yonkers Public Library branches, will remain open in the afternoon and early evening as official Cooling Centers. This will provide students, families, and senior residents with access to a safe refuge from the heat.
Superintendent of Schools Aníbal Soler Jr. expressed pride in opening schools across all corners of the city to provide a nearby cool space for families. "This is what community is about - stepping up, being there for each other, and using every resource we have to support our neighbors," he said. Each site will offer water and a cool space to rest as a simple but important way to help during this upcoming heatwave.

Jesse Montero, Director of Yonkers Public Library also added that their aim is to provide safe and comfortable spaces for all residents. "We're proud to serve as cooling centers during heatwaves and encourage anyone to stop by and cool off," he said.
Each Cooling Center will be equipped with seating, water, and air conditioning. The following locations will be open during specified hours for all residents:
Yonkers Public Schools:
- Yonkers Montessori Academy (Cafeteria) - Hyatt Place & Scott Avenue
- Paideia School 15 (Cafeteria) - Scarsdale Road and Manhattan Avenue
- School 23 (Library) - 56 Van Cortlandt Park Ave
- William Boyce Thompson (Library) - 1061 N. Broadway
- Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School (Cafeteria) - 121 McLean Avenue
- Roosevelt High School – Early College Studies (Library) - 631 Tuckahoe Road
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy (Cafeteria) - 135 Locust Hill Avenue
- Riverside High School (Cafeteria) - 565 Warburton Avenue

To ensure safety, the Mayor is also advising residents to take necessary precautions during periods of extreme heat. These include checking air conditioning units before use, installing window air conditioners properly and insulating them if necessary, using temporary window reflectors to keep heat out, and keeping storm windows in place year-round.
For those without air conditioning, it is recommended to open windows during the coolest part of the day and use circulating fans to keep fresh air moving. It is also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of cool non-alcoholic liquids and protecting oneself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored clothing.
Residents are also reminded to keep their pets indoors and refill their water bowls frequently. For more information on Yonkers Cooling Centers or for any additional assistance, residents can call the Mayor's 24/7 Help Line at (914) 377-HELP.
